Ink Prints

Early samples, quite abstract and textural. its amazing how you can create an illusion from the use of subtle tones and the suggestion of line. These are very loose studies but with refinement I feel there is something there. I will continue to investigate into this idea of printing tactile visuals on two dimensions.

Playing with Plastic

Playing with Plastic

A project driven by the exploration of a material. I discovered that this reformed plastic had incredible steam bending qualities which allowed for the design to mirror the contours of the relaxed body position. The construction consists of six identical pieces, two of which are reversed to create armrests as well as to provide structure. Accessible means of manufacture as well as the potential for tessellation in packaging proves promising. A design in its earliest form, requires development and sensitive handling of this versatile material. (http://www.ecoplastic.net/)

Work in Progress-Dorris Does Shop

July 9th, 2010

Here’s a quick picture of a work in progress. Dorris Does is a tiny shop situated in Camden Stables Market that will be selling vintage clothes and jewellery. It is the project of a friend of mine – she’s just leased the shop after working the market for over a year, and asked for my help to fit it out.

Tiger shaped sunshine.

Tiger shaped sunshine.

I do not really like nature. I suffer from hay fever, get bored when ‘walking’ , never relax, usually moan, and have to have some sort of picnic or food orientated goal to dilute the arduous task. However, yesterday was very different. It seemed that the sun was perfection and there was a lovely welsh breeze. My new baby sister had been born merely 3 days earlier and my other siblings (Tiger and Millie) were being complete legends.

Old Skool

Old Skool

Here are two pieces from my old portfolio. I think I did these around 3 or 4 years ago of my mate Seb who I used to share a space in the studio with. Those were the days when there seemed to be an unlimited supply of paints and no one would really wouldn’t care if you dropped and emptied a whole tube on the floor. Before coming to London, I actually got myself the biggest bag I could find and told the technician I had get a few of my old pieces when in fact I had gone in the store room and filled this bag with as much oil paints as I could.

The Brindle

The Brindle

So I don’t know which way it happened, maybe Nicola asked for a painting or I offered to do one for her birthday which was a good month or so ago. Anyways, the idea was to do a portrait and after a some vigorous browsing on Facebook I found the photo below. But I didn’t really want to paint it like for like so I wanted to experiment with it. I basically tried to emulate certain aspects of the Skinny Man I did a while back. It’s probably not the most flattering portrait but I guess my two reassurances are that I barely draw/paint girls and, to be fair, this doesn’t really look a whole lot like Nicola. So the mediums used are a little bit of a fine liner, pencils and oils on a primed piece of wood. To be honest, I don’t know if this works. Part of me feels like I should work on the face a bit more so I may claim it back sometime to work on it again. But for now, it’s done and dusted so there you go.

Nostalgia; going forward?

Nostalgia; going forward?

I have noticed… perhaps due to my dissertation being centered around tracing childhood memories and adult introspection… that ‘nostalgia’ has become a massive part of our visual future. Carol Mavor, in her stunning theoretical study ‘Reading Boyishly’, rescues nostalgia from an idealised cliche, and postulates that is it really about the notion of home, comfort and Heimlich (Freud’s familiar).
