A collection of drawings from Central Saint Martins (Foundation 08-09 & BA Stage 1 09-10), my design work has always predominately existed through 2d work. After my first year on the BA Product Design course, I realised (the hard way) that it is just one of the many skills a designer must use during the process. My style is quite illustrative and loose but does not describe technical aspects appropriately. I drew the way I did to try and make things more interesting for me and for other people but design sketches are not precious they are a means to an end. This calls for a change, new things to come…

A project driven by the exploration of a material. I discovered that this reformed plastic had incredible steam bending qualities which allowed for the design to mirror the contours of the relaxed body position. The construction consists of six identical pieces, two of which are reversed to create armrests as well as to provide structure. Accessible means of manufacture as well as the potential for tessellation in packaging proves promising. A design in its earliest form, requires development and sensitive handling of this versatile material. (http://www.ecoplastic.net/)

I do not really like nature. I suffer from hay fever, get bored when ‘walking’ , never relax, usually moan, and have to have some sort of picnic or food orientated goal to dilute the arduous task. However, yesterday was very different. It seemed that the sun was perfection and there was a lovely welsh breeze. My new baby sister had been born merely 3 days earlier and my other siblings (Tiger and Millie) were being complete legends.

Nature was lovely.

We walked along the fields, sat on the grass outside our house, raced each other and played games barefoot. It was all very Rousseau. I can truthfully say that i really enjoyed myself. I liked being muddy, not having to worry about anything and not caring what my hair looked like. Perhaps this is my post-finals-mother-nature-rehab recovered self… or perhaps my Claritin (Hayfever drug) had distorted my cynicism.

Either way, i even made an ‘aww’ noise at a passing lamb.

Despite their nostalgia and subjective sentiment, what i love about these pictures is the warm LIGHT, the youthful MOVEMENT, the playful saturated COLOURS and dare I say, the nature.

The idea is to inspire the recipient to make something; something playful, that can be made from a material that most people can get their hands on – an A4 sheet of paper. There is a slightly more sinister side to these instructions – hopefully the recipient will think the paper plane so good, that they want to hold on to the instructions and even show a friend! That said, it’s just a paper plane.

Oh well… we think they look nice anyway.

Here are two pieces from my old portfolio. I think I did these around 3 or 4 years ago of my mate Seb who I used to share a space in the studio with. Those were the days when there seemed to be an unlimited supply of paints and no one would really wouldn’t care if you dropped and emptied a whole tube on the floor. Before coming to London, I actually got myself the biggest bag I could find and told the technician I had get a few of my old pieces when in fact I had gone in the store room and filled this bag with as much oil paints as I could.

As you can see, I have a severe inability of painting below the neck. I think I just find faces far more interesting and I would always ruin pieces by drawing a really disproportionate or just a generally poorly drawn body. Also backgrounds were also tricky for me. I could never spend the time to draw every inch of detail because it was way too tedious and intricate of a job for me. I just stuck to the faces. I actually remember my art teacher taking the piss out of the second one saying it looked as if Seb had been slapped in the face and that the yellow streak was a massive trail of spit.
